Several hotels in Luxembourg City are offering package deals for this year’s National Day celebrations on 22nd June, which will be a special national holiday as Luxembourg celebrates 175 years of national independence with pageantry, torches, festivals and fireworks.
From the afternoon of 22nd June, the streets of Luxembourg old town, classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site and cheerfully decorated with flowers, will proudly display the colours of the nation. The changing of the guard takes place at 4.00pm in front of the Grand Duke’s palace – thousands of onlookers watch every year as Luxembourg is the only Grand Duchy in the world.
The military band will play at Place Guillaume II in the presence of the Grand Ducal family and members of the Government. The retreat by torchlight, the highlight of the festivities, will fill the streets from 10.00pm, with groups of torch-bearers alternating with bands and decorated cars. Many onlookers will join the after parties in the bistros of the city centre – and a magnificent fireworks display will start at 11.30pm above the rooftops of the historic city.
On 23rd June, cannons will be fired 101 times in honour of the Grand Duke – and at 11.30am the prestigious Avenue de la Liberté will provide an outstanding setting for a military parade by the world’s smallest army.
