United Cup Goes North

United Cup Goes North

After a successive four years of winning the United Cup (North v South), the South under the Captaincy of Philip Airey lost to the North by 5 matches to 4 at Carton House last Thursday. Endeavouring to be gracious to the winners led by Jonathan Miller, Philip could only muster a muted: “Well done – and it could be good for the game and the competition.”

On a cold but dry day, the Montgomerie Course at Carton House was a real challenge and played like its designer in a bad mood. The match came down to the last 4-ball and the Northern team of Robert Galbraith and Terry Murphy Senior brought their team over the winning line.

Barry Jackson, United’s Account Manager Northern Ireland, was in charge for the presentation of the prizes and Pat Reede was delighted to stress the great friendships and relationships built up over 17 years in the South and 10 years in the North.

There were two great individual scores with Aaron Bolt (North) scoring 40 points off a handicap of 21 and Clem Walshe (South) on 37 points off a handicap of 5.

As usual on these occasions, the hospitality supplied by United Airlines was of the very highest order and the golf, reception and dinner was enjoyed by all.
