Transatlantic Flights from Cork Airport Will Start as Soon as Possible Following Decision

Cork Airport management recently welcomed the US Department of Transportation’s issuing of an Order to Show Cause in relation to the awarding of a foreign carrier permit to Norwegian Air International to commence the first transatlantic service from Cork Airport.

This announcement opened a time-bound process for all interested parties to make submissions supporting or opposing the awarding of the permit. The last date for submissions was 16th May 2016, with a final decision by the Department of Transportation expected later in the month. If successful, Norwegian Air has said it would hope to start flights as soon as August 2016.

Niall MacCarthy, Managing Director at Cork Airport, said everyone had worked hard over many months in both Washington and locally to make the transatlantic routes happen. “We are very close to a significant milestone in the airport’s history,” he said. “Our passengers have been very supportive since it was first announced that Cork Airport was to get its first transatlantic service and we hope to secure this route very soon.

“Once the licence process is cleared, we look forward to engaging with Norwegian to get tickets on sale as soon as possible and the earliest practical start to operations from Cork to Boston, followed by New York in due course.”
